Some students seem to understand when they see a teacher solve a question, but they have difficulty in solving the same question on their own. It is because they couldn't completely understand what the teacher had explained, even though they seemed to understand the explanation. They can solve the question on their own only when they review it properly and make it their own. It is the same with the Scriptures of the Bible. When we read the Bible and hear it, it doesn't necessarily mean our faith grows. When we put the words into practice, our faith grows and reach the full measure of the faith of Christ. "Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself" (James 2:17).
