Deacon Wanbum Lee Awarded the Plaque of Recognition
Deacon Wanbum Lee, Head of Geumcheon District, Korea League of Disabled Voters) was awarded the plaque of recognition at the 3rd Awards Ceremony of the Prize of the Great Disabled of Korea held in the Korea Press Center on May 22nd. He was recognized for his service and his dedication to social welfare improvement and the protection of the human rights of the abandoned and the poor. He had an infantile paralysis when he was two years old and after that he was diagnosed with a 2nd degree disability rating. Previously he couldn't walk without crutches. But he didn't get discouraged by the reality of his situation, but managed everything positively with faith. In 2001, his wife heard through the radio that there were special courses for disabled social workers, and advised him to take the courses. He followed the advice and then he took his first step in social welfare as a social worker. He looks rather shy, saying, "I have been doing this because I liked to be of a little help to people in difficulties. But they gave me this award unexpectedly." He has a son and a daughter by his wife Myungok Lee. The prize for "Great Disabled Koreans" is given to the disabled who are dedicated to the rehabilitation and the improvement of the welfare and wellbeing of the disabled; who address the protection of the human rights of the disabled; and who change the prospective for those with disabilities.
