Why Does God Give the Gift of Holy Spirit?
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you" (John 14:26).
Why does God give the gift of the Holy Spirit to all who have accepted and believed Jesus Christ as their Savior?
First, it is because God the Father loves His children.
As said in Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us," the God of love let His Son Jesus be crucified to redeem us from our sins, and Jesus became the atoning sacrifice for us.
As a consequence, if you believe in your heart that Jesus is the only Savior and that He was raised from death, then you can be forgiven of all your sins and gained the right to become God's children. But there may be sinful natures that still remain in your hearts although you accepted the Lord. Then, when the enemy devil and Satan tempt you with worldly pleasure, money, or fame, they may agitate these natures in you. Then you might commit sins again and be dragged into death (1 Peter 5:8).
For this reason, the God of love sent the Holy Spirit as a gift into the hearts of believers who accepted the Lord and thoroughly repented. The Holy Spirit gives birth to spirit in them and guides them to become God's true children who can possess the Lord's heart. Therefore, if you have received the Holy Spirit as a gift, then it is the same as though God is with you.
Before they received the Holy Spirit, Jesus' disciples were afraid of persecutions and trials and fled. But after they received the Holy Spirit and obeyed God's will, as written in the Acts of Apostles, they even manifested the power of God and boldly preached the gospel. They drove out the enemy devil and Satan, and by showing strength, authority, and power, they led countless souls to God.
Romans 5:5 says, "…and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." So, I wish for all of you to remember that it is because of the love of God that the Holy Spirit dwells in your hearts.
Secondly, it is because God wants to strengthen and encourage you to live by His Word.
As the Helper, among the fundamental duties of the Holy Spirit are to move and change the hearts of men, to help them repent, and to let them love God.
When people fail to live by the Word of God and sin, the Holy Spirit dwelling in them intercedes for them with the groaning words that cannot be expressed. When the Holy Spirit in them groans for them, the children of God feel troubled in their hearts, and they regret that they have not lived by the Word of God.
They may feel so sorry and oppressed that they may not have the confidence of repenting of their sins and turning from them. Finally they shrink back in spirit. But Romans 8:26-27 states, "In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." That is, the Holy Spirit asks God's grace for the souls.
The Holy Spirit does not want to lose a single soul, so He always prays to God that He may lead them to salvation. He asks for the mercy, love, and forgiveness of God for the souls who are in spiritual crises with far more groaning and petition than the souls themselves. He also pours out the spirit of repentance onto them and helps them repent of their sins and dwell in God's love again.
Even in trials, if they are sure of God's love, they can overcome all the trials. The Holy Spirit lets them realize why they are suffering trials and helps them understand God's love contained in the trials. If they do not listen to His voice and ignore His works, however, then He will give up speaking to them and may be extinguished within them. Then they have nothing to do with salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:19).
Once the Holy Spirit is extinguished, from then it is very hard for them to receive Him again. It's because the God of love has endured for a lengthy time and given countless opportunities to them. But if the Holy Spirit in them is extinguished, it proves that they have built the wall of sin very high. Therefore, God's children who received the Holy Spirit must cast off untruthful attributes from heart quickly by His help and walk in the Light.
Thirdly, it is because He wishes to confirm that the power of God can break fleshly thoughts that cannot be destroyed by human ability
Today, the world abounds with so much mistaken knowledge and faulty theories that if we preach the gospel just with our lips, few will accept the gospel. The gospel cannot enter their hearts because their fleshly thoughts and frameworks of their thoughts strongly wrap their hearts.
Hence, we have to first demolish the fleshly thoughts to plant true faith into their hearts. If we see what is impossible with human thoughts, methods and abilities be done by the power of the Holy Spirit and experience those works, our fleshly thoughts will be broken and we will be able to believe in God and the authenticity of the Bible. This is a work of the power of the Holy Spirit.
So, the Holy Spirit continually gives realization and enlightenment to God's children and urges them to go into spirit and whole spirit. He encourages them to discover and throw away the slightest and most minute form of evil from within their heart. When people become a proper vessel through this process, they can receive the spiritual authority to defeat the enemy devil and Satan and receive the strength to make the impossible possible, and manifest God's power.
Signs and wonders performed by the Holy Spirit's power give concrete evidence of the living God so that men can believe God who is not seen (John 4:48). At this end time when sins are prevalent, it is not easy to have true faith. When they witness explicit signs and wonders that are undeniable, they can believe the living God and Jesus as their Savior and finally reach salvation.
Therefore, we have to understand the reason God gives us the Holy Spirit as a gift, quickly achieve sanctification, and become God's true children. By doing so, let's become the Holy Spirit's precious instruments for this end time.
